Often, candidates tend to adopt a short-term perspective when considering their next position, viewing it solely as a “job change” and placing a heavy emphasis on compensation. Unfortunately, this narrow focus often leads to short duration and a wasted opportunity.

We recommend candidates approach their career moves with a broader perspective, delving deeply into the following four aspects, which we refer to as the 4P’s:

  1. PEOPLE:
  • How solid is the leadership of the company, as well as your immediate supervisor?
  • Is this their first rodeo or have they shown consistent, positive leadership in their track record?
  • What can you learn from these individuals?
  1. PRODUCT (or Service):
  • Evaluate the uniqueness of the company’s product or service in the market.
  • Explore whether there are any barriers to entry or patents that provide a competitive advantage.
  • Investigate whether the company is a one-trick pony or if they have a pipeline of new products in development.
  1. PERSONALITY (or Culture):
  • Observe whether they “walk their talk” and align their actions with their stated values.
  • Consider if they invest in their employees’ development and provide opportunities for internal promotions.
  • Assess whether the company fosters an open, ethical, and transparent culture or if there is a pervasive sense of constant vigilance and mistrust.
  1. PACKAGE (Compensation, benefits, etc.):
  • Recognize the importance of fair compensation and the need to meet financial obligations.
  • Are there some Long Term Incentives (LTI) that employees can receive and share the company’s gains?

By thoroughly exploring and considering these aspects—the people, the product or service, the company’s personality or culture, and the compensation package—candidates can make more informed decisions, positioning themselves for long-term success and fulfillment in their careers.
